According to the Chief Election Commissioner, if a person turns 18 on January 2, then he cannot register himself as a voter for the whole year.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sushil Chandra has urged the government afresh to give multiple dates in a year to register as voters to youths who are turning 18. According to the current system, only a person who turns 18 on or before January 1, can enroll his name in the voter list. People who turn 18 after January 1 have to wait a whole year to register as a voter.
“It has been our suggestion that at least four dates should be given in a year so that the youth do not have to wait a whole year to register as voters,” Chandra told. , “There should be many dates and I would like it to be quick.”

Chandra said that in a recent meeting with top officials of the Law Ministry, the Election Commission has once again emphasized on this old demand. He said that the officials agreed to expedite this reform. The Representation of the People Act would need to be amended to fix multiple dates in a year for voter registration. As per Section 14(b) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, the eligibility date means the first day of January when the electoral roll is prepared or reviewed.
Election Commission had decided to form a core committee
Earlier, the Election Commission had decided to constitute a core committee under the chairmanship of the Secretary General to identify the shortcomings, experiences and learnings from the recent elections in Assam, Bihar, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry. The committee was asked to analyze the experiences in the States/UTs and suggest further ways and reforms. The Deputy Election Commissioner of the Election Commission and the Chief Electoral Officers of the most recent polling states and some selected Special Observers were said to be members of this committee.
