Pakistan's Ambassador to United Nations Asim Ifikhar Ahmed
Pakistan on Tuesday handled the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). In the election of the United Nations General Assembly held in June 2024, Pakistan got 182 votes out of 193, resulting in a non-installed member of UNSC for 2025-26 in January. This is the first chairmanship of Pakistan since 2013 and this is its eighth term as a non-established member.
Earlier, Pakistan has been a part of this council in 2012-13, 2003-04, 1993-94, 1983-84, 1976-77, 1968-69, and 1952-53. But this year becoming the president of Pakistan is raising many questions, because it has happened at a time when the incidents of war and terror have increased in many parts of the world and there are serious allegations against Pakistan that it is involved in sheltering terrorists and breach of regional peace.
After the recent tension with India, Pakistan is a matter of concern for India. Because Pakistan's responsibilities because of the presidency include coordinating meetings, creating UNSC agenda and facilitating dialogue, all meetings will be chaired by Pakistan Foreign Minister. Although presidency does not provide veto power, it is reserved only for permanent members.

The Indian side is concerned in such a situation that India's interests can be ignored by Pakistan, because India is not a member of UNSC this year. Let us know how Pakistan got this post, what is the process to achieve the presidency of UNSC and why India is no longer a part of it.
What is UNSC and how to become its members?
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six special institutions of the United Nations, which has been given the responsibility of maintaining international peace and security. It is built under the United Nations Charter and its main work is accustomed to ensure international peace and safety, conflict solutions, restrictions and military action, new members in the UN.
The UNSC consists of five permanent members (China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and America) and ten non-established members, in which non-institution is chosen annually for a two-year term. Pakistan has replaced Japan for the Asian seat in 2025. At the same time, India has been selected as an eight-time non-established member, the most recent term is 2021-2022. Apart from Pakistan this year, Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Panama, Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Slonia and Somalia are non-installed members.
Is it increased for Pakistan to chant UNSC?
The Presidency of UNSC is a rotation process and a large extent is a symbolic role, which has no executive authority. However, Pakistan can raise the Kashmir issue and dispute with India through Pakistan.

The Economic Times was stated in a report that India is preparing a strategy to counter the chairmanship of Pakistan. India will try to attract the attention of the world along with working for the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, as well as the attention of terrorism across the border.
