Rishi Sunak would be the UK’s subsequent prime minister after Penny Mordaunt withdrew from the competition.
Ms Mordaunt had been the one different MP left within the race after Boris Johnson dramatically withdrew on Sunday evening.
But she confronted an uphill battle to safe the 100 nominations wanted to remain in rivalry.
She had simply 24 declared supporters.
By mid-morning the writing gave the impression to be on the wall, when a kind of, former minister George Freeman, appeared to brazenly name on her to tug out for the sake of get together “unity”.
Team Morduant battled on nevertheless, claiming that that they had now secured 90 supporters, though the listing of those that had finished so publicly barely rose.
Mr Sunak is to handle Tory MPs at 2.30pm.
In a press release on Twitter, Ms Mordaunt stated it was clear that MPs felt “we need certainty”. She added: “They have taken this decision in good faith for the good of the country.
“Members should know that this proposition has been fairly and thoroughly tested by the agreed 1922 process.
“As a result, we have now chosen our next Prime Minister. This decision is an historic one and shows, once again, the diversity and talent of our party. Rishi has my full support.
“I am proud of the campaign we ran and grateful to all those, across all sides of our party, who gave me their backing.
“We all owe it to the country, to each other and to Rishi to unite and work together for the good of the nation. There is much work to be done.”
