CM Dhami was defeated in Khatima
In the assembly elections held in the state, the state’s CM Pushkar Singh Dhami had to face a big defeat. He was defeated by Bhuvan Kapri of Congress. However, BJP got an absolute majority in the state and the BJP high command bet on Dhami. After which Kailash Gahatodi resigned from the post of MLA from Champawat seat and after which by-election is being held on this seat. In Khatima seat, Congress candidate defeated CM Dhami by about six thousand votes.
Dhami won by just two thousand votes in 2017
State CM Pushkar Singh Dhami had first contested the 2012 assembly elections and he managed to win from Khatima seat. After this, he again contested from Khatima seat in 2017 and defeated Congress candidate Bhuvan Kapri by just 2 thousand votes. Whereas this time Kapri has defeated him by more than six thousand votes.
BJP had thrown full force in the election campaign
To win this seat, BJP had given full force and the veteran leaders of the state had camped in Champawat. Not only this, BJP had left the Congress far behind in terms of campaigning. BJP also fielded its star campaigner and UP CM Yogi Adityanath in the election campaign. Whereas apart from the state level leaders of Congress, no one campaigned in Champawat seat.
