External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asked, if India’s buying of oil from Russia is to fund Ukraine war, then is not European countries buying gas and oil from Russia promoting war?
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar (EAM S Jaishankar) China said on Friday that if Europe buys oil and gas from Russia in such a way that its economy is not affected, then such freedom should be for others as well. S Jaishankar asked, if India’s buying of oil from Russia is to fund the Ukraine war, is not European countries buying gas and oil from Russia promoting war? Jaishankar’s remarks at an interactive session during a conference held in Slovakian capital Bratislava came in the backdrop of growing criticism of Western countries over India’s import of subsidized Russian oil.
The foreign minister said that today, Europe is buying oil and gas from Russia and the sanctions imposed on Russia have been designed in such a way that it does not have much negative impact on the welfare of the people. He said that instead of immediately cutting Russian energy imports, a time limit has been set for this. Jaishankar said, ‘People need to understand that if you can be considerate of yourself, then of course you can take care of other people too.’ Jaishankar was asked about the report on a nine-fold increase in India’s crude oil imports from Russia.
Europe has to come out of that mindset
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday that India’s relations with China are uncomfortable, but we are fully capable of managing them. He rejected Europe’s view that if India’s problems with China escalate, then India’s stand on Ukraine could make it difficult for it to get global support. Jaishankar said that China does not need an example from anywhere else about how to include or not to include us or be uncomfortable with us or not be uncomfortable with us. He said that Europe has to get out of the mindset that its problems are the problems of the whole world but the problem of the world is not the problem of Europe. Jaishankar’s stern remarks come at a time when European countries are constantly trying to persuade India to take a tough stand against Russia over the attack on Ukraine. They argue that in future India may have to face similar challenges from China.
Our uneasy relationship with China
The foreign minister said, ‘The relationship you are talking about, our relations with China are uncomfortable and we are fully capable of managing them. If I get a global understanding and support about this, then naturally it will help me.’ He said that but the idea that I should join one struggle because it will help me in another struggle…that’s not how the world works. Jaishankar said that many of our problems with China have nothing to do with Ukraine and neither does it have anything to do with Russia. The Foreign Minister was asked whether you think that if there is a problem with China, then someone will help India, if it does not help others with Ukraine. He said that whatever happened between China and India Yes, it happened long before Ukraine and China does not need to take precedent in this matter from anywhere else. (input language)
