After releasing the fish into the river, it is seen whether the fish are living properly in the river or not, breeding or not and their numbers are increasing or not.
National Mission for Clean Ganga (National Mission for Clean GangaUnder this scheme, the central government will study the life cycle of dolphins and hilsa fishes in the Ganges. Its objective is to ascertain the health of the holy river Ganga in different galactic regions of the country. National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMSG) Director General G Ashok Kumar (G Ashok KumarAccording to NMCG, CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIRTogether with ) this study will be conducted. According to a PTI report, under this program, bio-indicators and micro-organisms such as dolphin and hilsa fish populations will be studied to find out how much the river’s health has improved.
NMSG G Ashok Kumar, Director General, G. Ashok Kumar said that these bio-indicators play an important role in ascertaining the health of the river. “We have taken several initiatives under NMCG to improve water quality and through the study we want to check how much has been improved,” he said.
Cultivation of more than 6 lakh fish
The impact of human intervention on microbial diversity and the emergence of E. coli present in the river Ganga will also be studied. Senior official G Ashok said that this is part of various studies and research being done by NMCG on river Ganga. He said, more than 6 lakh adult Hilsa fishes have been reared. This will help in the conservation and propagation of Hilsa fish germplasm in river Ganga. He said that in the last four years, about 190 species of fish have been recorded, which provides livelihood to the fishermen living along the river.
How do fishes tell the health of the river?
The fish living in the rivers tell the health of the river. About the Biodiversity Conservator Deepak Kumar Sah has NewsNCR Digital Told that the health of the river can be ascertained from the organisms living in the river. Just as some insects, creatures, etc. are an indicator of dirty and contaminated water, in the same way fishes are also an indicator of clean water. After releasing the fish in the river, it is seen whether the fish are living properly in the river or not, breeding or not and their numbers are increasing or not. In this way the health of the river is also known.
Deepak, who conducts periodic surveys and studies and surveys in the Ganges river from Farakka Barrage to Varanasi via Bhagalpur, Munger, Patna, says that there is a dolphin sanctuary in Bhagalpur, but siltation in the Ganges river is a big problem here. Deepak tells that Hilsa fishes used to come to the Ganges for breeding, but now they do not come due to siltation.
He told that dolphins are found in fresh and clean water. Dolphins are often seen in the Ganges, but due to human intervention, their conservation also seems to be in danger. He told that recently two lakh fish have been released in Sultanganj. Its objective is both to balance biodiversity and to earn a living for the fishermen. But the problem is that fishermen use restricted nets in the Ganges. The problem with the use of mosquito nets is that small fish and their eggs get caught in the net along with big fish and due to this their life circle is affected.
