The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a monsoon alert for Uttarakhand, warning of intense rainfall activity over the next few days. The alert comes as several districts in the hill state continue to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, raising concerns about landslides, flash floods, and road blockages, especially in vulnerable mountain regions.
IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall, Landslides Likely in Hilly Areas
According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rain is expected in the districts of Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Nainital, and Pithoragarh, while moderate showers are likely in Dehradun, Tehri, and Haridwar. Red and orange alerts have been issued for select regions depending on forecast severity.
With hilly terrains already saturated from recent rains, authorities fear a spike in landslides, rockfalls, and road blockages. The Char Dham Yatra routes, including the stretches leading to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri, are being continuously monitored. In vulnerable zones, earthmovers and rescue personnel have been stationed in advance.
Tourists and pilgrims heading toward Char Dham routes
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and district administrations have been placed on high alert. Tourists and pilgrims heading toward Char Dham routes, including Kedarnath and Badrinath, are advised to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel.
Several interior roads and highways, especially those in higher altitudes
Several interior roads and highways, especially those in higher altitudes, may face temporary closures due to landslides or waterlogging. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas and near rivers to remain cautious.
The Uttarakhand State Emergency Operations Centre has also asked all departments to be ready with response teams, excavation equipment, and shelters for displaced persons if required.
Monsoon in Uttarakhand typically brings fertility to farmlands but also poses natural disaster risks due to the region’s fragile ecosystem and geography. The public is urged to remain alert, follow government advisories, and call emergency helplines in case of trouble.
