North Korea on Thursday fired a ballistic missile towards its eastern seaboard. North Korea had warned
Earlier, North Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Son Hye warned on Thursday that the recent summit of the US, South Korea and Japan over Pyongyang’s missile launches would make tensions on the Korean Peninsula more unpredictable. Cho’s statement was North Korea’s first official response to US President Joe Biden’s recent trilateral summit with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts.
After the summit, the three leaders issued a joint statement strongly condemning North Korea’s recent missile tests and agreed to work together to strengthen deterrence.
North Korea will intensify retaliation
In the statement, Biden reiterated the US commitment to protect South Korea and Japan through all other military measures, including nuclear weapons. The more assistance the US offers to its allies and the more provocative military activities they conduct on the Korean Peninsula, the stronger North Korea’s retaliation will be, Cho said.
This, he warned, would pose a more serious, realistic and unavoidable threat to the US and the forces at its behest. Cho did not specify what steps North Korea might take, but said the US would be well aware that it was making a bet it would surely regret.
