At least one of the missiles fired by North Korea was headed towards a South Korean island. However, that missile fell near the maritime boundary of both the rivals. South Korea also fired its missile in the same border area as a retaliation.
Hours before this, North Korea threatened both countries in protest against the ongoing South Korean-US military exercise that they may have to pay the “worst price in history”. North Korea also threatened to use nuclear weapons. The US, however, said it had no hostile intentions towards North Korea and insisted on working with its allies to curb North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.

South Korea has said that North Korea has fired a total of 23 missiles from its eastern and western coasts. South Korea’s military said one of the 17 missiles flew in the direction of a South Korean island but landed near the maritime boundary of the two adversaries. South Korea said it had issued an air strike alert for that island. Hours later, the South Korean military said it had withdrawn its alert for an air strike on the island. South Korea’s transport ministry said it had launched a missile strike over the country’s eastern waters by early Thursday morning. Some airways have been closed.
Earlier, South Korean media released pictures of people living on the island being taken to underground shelters. The area where the missile landed is 26 kilometers (16 mi) from the eastern maritime boundary of the Korean peninsula. However, its distance from the international border is quite high. South Korea’s military said that this is the first time since the creation of North and South Korea in 1948, when a missile has fallen so close to the sea border.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a separate statement, this is unacceptable and we will not tolerate it. At the same time, South Korea has retaliated against it and tested three air-to-surface missiles. According to South Korea’s military, its fighter planes fired three missiles on Wednesday near the eastern border of the rival country. The military said that the action was taken in response to North Korean missile tests.
