External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said that in Samarkand, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin The remarks made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine should not be seen as a change in India’s stand on the issue. Also, on the matter of reforms in UNAC, the External Affairs Minister said that United Nations Security Council The need for reform (UNSC) cannot always be denied. On Russia’s referendum, the Foreign Minister said that we will keep our point in the United Nations.
On India’s stance on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Jaishankar said that India has been continuously saying that the war between Russia and Ukraine should end at the earliest. Responding to a question on the completed referendum in Ukraine in the Russian-occupied territories, the External Affairs Minister told a group of Indian journalists in Washington on Wednesday, “India will take its stand on this issue at the United Nations in New York. This issue will come up for consideration in the United Nations. So I request you to wait and see what our ambassadors there say.”
Need for diplomatic solution: Jaishankar
On the September 16 meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Putin in Samarkand, Jaishankar said it was the first direct interaction between the two leaders after the war in Ukraine broke out. “It is natural that the press was addressed after the one-on-one meeting and we can watch the video of that occasion,” he said.
He said, “It is not that we have not said anything about it earlier. We have been expressing our concern about this war. We have been emphasizing the need to end this fight as soon as possible and for a negotiated and diplomatic solution.” Jaishankar said, “It was quite natural that the Prime Minister of India and the President of Russia would meet on such an occasion, then these subjects were to be discussed and the Prime Minister did so.” He also said that talks with Putin in Samarkand have not changed India’s stand on Ukraine.
Can’t deny reforms in UNSC: Jaishankar
Talking about reforms in the UNAC, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said that the need for reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) cannot always be denied.
“We never thought it would be an easy process, but we believe the need for reform cannot always be denied,” he said in response to a question about the US’s seriousness in reforming the Security Council. “I believe that the stance that President (Joe) Biden has taken clearly underscores US support for reform of the United Nations, including the Security Council,” he said. I think it’s up to all of us and the member states of the United Nations, where we take it.”
Similarly, in the context of China’s growing military presence in the strategic region, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that India tries to build such relations with China which are based on mutual sensitivity, respect and mutual interest. China has territorial disputes with several countries in the strategic Indo-Pacific region and has been opposed to the active US policy, especially in the disputed South China Sea.
He said, “We are constantly striving to improve relations with China. A relationship that is built on mutual sensitivity, respect and mutual interest.” Responding to a question on India and America’s plan to deal with China, he said that both the countries share common objectives of betterment and strengthening of the Indo-Pacific.
