Climate change is having a major impact on Greenland. The ice here is retreating so fast that the sea level is rising. It will grow much more than what scientists have predicted. According to research published in the journal Nature, due to rising sea level, there is a danger of deluge in those parts of the world which are inhabited along the coasts.

To stop the effects of climate change, world leaders are discussing at COP27 held in Egypt. A research report that came in the meantime is shocking. The report says, Climate change It is having a big impact on Greenland. The ice here is retreating so fast that the sea level is rising. It will grow much more than what scientists have predicted. According to research published in the journal Nature, there is a danger of deluge in those parts of the world which are settled on the shores of the beaches.
Recent research has revealed that the ice in Greenland is retreating so fast that by 2100, the sea level will increase up to 6 times worldwide. It has also been said in the research that the water level at the end of the century will increase as much as the ice sheet in Greenland has increased in the last 50 years.
4 big things about the report
- To understand the impact of climate change on glaciers, the researchers used data from GPS and satellite data from the past few decades. Due to the retreat of ice, the ice sheet from the coast of Greenland to the next 300 kilometers has become thinner.
- Matthew Morlingham, Professor of Earth Sciences at Dartmouth, says that in recent decades, many glaciers have reduced their size due to the retreat. GPS data tells how climate change is affecting them. Its effect is also visible in the cities and countries situated on the coast.
- Researchers have said in their report that the risk could be much higher than what has been estimated. If the ice continues to retreat so fast, Greenland will be devastated. To confirm this, the researchers tested their results on several parameters, after which those facts were included in the report.
- Professor Shafqat Abbas Khan of DTU Space says that the speed at which the ice is being receded can be seen clearly. Every year, it has come to the fore in research that how glaciers are retreating and to what extent the threat is increasing for the coming time. It has become very difficult to think how this can be stopped.
This city of India is most at risk
The United Nations report on climate change says, India’s Kolkata is among the 8 cities in the world where the risk of death due to floods is highest. Apart from Kolkata, it includes Tokyo, Osaka, Karachi, Manila, Tiajin and Jakarta. The report says, the impact of climate change will be most visible in Asian countries. By 2050, the world’s largest coastal cities will be hit by floods.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Kolkata and its surrounding areas are most prone to cyclones. Due to the storms in the last few years, the surrounding greenery has been damaged on a large scale. Due to this the risk of flood has increased even more.
