China has warned America
China warned the US not to interfere in the Asian dispute as a whole and said that the US Navy and Air Force combat exercises in the disputed waters were militarizing the South China Sea. China has disputes with the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei over some disputed islands in the region. In talks with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Manila on Monday, Harris reiterated Washington’s commitment to defend the Philippines under a 1951 mutual defense treaty. He told Marcos Jr., “America’s mutual defense commitments will apply in response to an attack on Philippine armed forces, public vessels or aircraft in the South China Sea, and this is our unwavering promise to the Philippines.”
Will also meet fishermen
Marcos Jr. thanked Harris for this. During her visit to Palawan’s main city of Puerto Princesa, Harris will meet with a small fishing community, the Tagburos, and discuss with villagers the impact of illegal fishing on their livelihoods. She will also announce an additional $7.5 million in aid to the Philippines’ maritime law enforcement agencies to combat illegal fishing, maritime surveillance and search and rescue efforts.
