The age of players beyond 40 is almost at rest. One has to spend full time with the family. Every festival has to be celebrated. Colin Cowdrey, 42, was doing the same. Was sitting in his house in Kent. We were planning what special to do on Christmas. England batsman Colin was excited about the upcoming festival. She was busy preparing for Christmas with the family, when she got a call and had to leave everything and fly to Australia.
Actually that call had come from the English team, which was on Australia tour, but was struggling with injuries before the second test. In such a situation, England called Colin to England. Colin did not even have time to prepare and without preparation, at the age of 42, he was dropped in front of dangerous bowlers like Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson. That date was December 13, the year was 1974. That is, exactly 48 years before today, Colin had made such a comeback, which cricket lovers have not forgotten even today.
Colin returned after 3 years
Everyone was surprised to see Colin on the field. Colin also landed without practice, but when he stood at the crease with the bat, he could not seem to see that he had landed to play a Test match after 3 years. In the first innings, he scored 22 runs and was bowled by Thomson. Opening with David Lloyd in the second innings, he scored 41 off 96 balls. In this innings too, Thomson got out LBW. Although England could not save the match even after trying a million and lost the Perth Test by 9 wickets.
Introduced himself in a fun way
Another interesting incident happened in this match. In fact, when Colin was hunted by Thomson, he lovingly told himself that Hello, I’m Colin Cowdrey, I can’t believe we met. After returning from this match, Colin played 4 more Test matches for England till 1975.
