On the fourth day, it was expected that the Indian bowlers would dominate from the opening session itself, but the Bangladeshi openers had different intentions and they took the score to 119 runs without losing a wicket in the entire session. Finally, from the second session, India started getting wickets.
Good bowling and patience paid off
By the end of the day’s play, Bangladesh scored 272 runs losing 6 wickets and now Team India needs only 4 wickets on the last day. However, at one time the opening pair of Najmul Hossain Shanto and debutant Zakir Hasan was becoming a disaster for India. After the end of the day’s play, bowling coach Paras Mhambre told that the Indian bowlers showed patience and that ultimately led to success. Mhambre said,
Batting was getting easier. But due to good bowling in the first season, we got the advantage in the next two seasons. It was the result of being patient because we knew that the wicket was getting easier and it would make it difficult for us. The focus was to create chances by putting the ball in the right areas, even if there were few chances.
Don’t panic, need patience
Speaking about the performance of the Indian team and especially the bowlers, the coach said, “We knew that we had given a big target. So we don’t have to worry. The atmosphere in the dressing room was very calm. We made up for it a bit in the next two sessions by taking six wickets. We still have to be patient. Overall I am happy with the bowling of my team.
Zakir Hasan (100) scored a century on debut and added a record 124 runs for the first wicket with Shanto (67 runs). Then in the next two sessions, India made a comeback and reduced Bangladesh’s score to 272 for six at stumps on the fourth day. Akshar Patel took 3 wickets from India, while Umesh Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav took 1-1 wickets.
