On May 13, India banned wheat exports citing food security, global situation and rising food prices in the domestic market. India exported 4.71 lakh tonnes of wheat to the UAE in the financial year 2021-22.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday introduced Indian wheat (Wheat) and banned the export of flour for the next 4 months. This decision will be effective for four months from May 13, 2022. In an official statement issued by the UAE’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, it was said that this ban will apply to Indian wheat, flour made from Indian wheat and all its other products. Different types of discussions are going on regarding this decision of UAE, but UAE has taken this decision only because of India.
A report published in the Indian Express quoted sources as saying that India does not want Dubai and Abu-Dhabi to send the exported wheat or flour to any other country. India wishes that its wheat should be used domestically and its benefits reach the Indians working there as well. In return, India can keep the UAE out of the list of countries that have banned wheat exports, the report said.
growing exports from india
On May 13, India banned wheat exports citing food security, global situation and rising food prices in the domestic market. India exported 4.71 lakh tonnes of wheat to the UAE in the financial year 2021-22. This figure of exports for India is not very big, but it is very high in terms of UAE. According to estimates by the US Department of Agriculture, the UAE consumes 1.5 million tonnes of wheat annually, and the entire wheat exports to the UAE.
UAE exports 50 percent of its wheat requirement from Russia. After this, Canada imports wheat from Ukraine and Australia. India has emerged as a major supplier to the UAE from the financial year 2020-21. In 2020, India exported 1.88 lakh tonnes of wheat, which increased to about five and a half lakh tonnes in 2021. India was increasingly exporting wheat to the UAE after the Russo-Ukraine war affected global supplies. Had India not banned exports, this time the figure would have gone up.
Supply expected to improve from July
Trade sources say that the global supply of wheat will improve in the coming months. In Russia and Ukraine, after the harvesting of wheat in the month of July, the arrivals in the market will increase. Although Ukraine’s exports may be halved this time. According to the US Department of Agriculture, Ukraine exported a total of 19 million tonnes of wheat last year. This time it is estimated to be only 10 million tonnes. However, Russia’s exports may increase from 33 million tonnes to 40 million tonnes this time.
