Following the death of an accused in the Birbhum violence in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the West Bengal Police has registered a murder case against the CBI officials. Lalan Sheikh, one of the accused in the death of 10 people in the Birbhum violence, committed suicide on Monday. Lalan Sheikh’s body reached his village Bogtui on Wednesday. A CBI source said that the body of the main accused of arson and violence in Bengal’s Bogtui village was found hanging in a temporary CBI office on Monday.
Lalan Sheikh was arrested earlier this month from a hideout on the Bengal-Jharkhand border. He ended his life by hanging himself with a ‘gamcha’ in the washroom of the office. CBI has set up its temporary office in a guest house in Rampurhat area. While his family members alleged that Lalan Sheikh died due to alleged torture given in CBI custody.
Talking to PTI, a CBI source said that Shaikh was found hanging in the washroom of the guest house around 4.30 pm. Where the two Investigating Officers (IO) of the case were in the court at that time.
All necessary procedures are being followed
The source said that a CRPF constable was outside the washroom, but despite his presence, the accused committed suicide. Police and the National Human Rights Commission of India have been informed about the incident. All necessary procedures are being followed. A CBI source said that after the arrest, the accused was initially sent to CBI custody for six days and later it was extended for three more days.
