Weather Update: According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there will be dense to extremely dense fog in the northern Indian states through January 2. The IMD’s morning bulletin states that cold day conditions are expected to persist in certain areas of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. According to the Met Department, fog conditions won’t clear before January 2.
Alert Levels for Fog
For today and tomorrow, there is an orange alert for fog in Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, and a red alert for today. An orange alert warning has also been issued for Punjab for December 31. Up until January 2, the IMD issued a yellow alert for fog in the northern Indian states. Transport services have been severely impacted by these dense fog conditions, resulting in numerous cancellations and delays of trains and flights. Numerous trains, including the Rajdhani Express on the Delhi-Howrah route, are running between 10 and 12 hours late, according to the Northern Railways’ most recent updates.
Flight Delays Amidst Disruption
A few flight operations have been delayed as a result of the disruption. The minimum temperature in Delhi was 10.7 degrees Celsius on Friday, which was a rise from 8.4 degrees Celsius the day before. Over the next five days, the minimum temperature is expected to stay between seven and eight degrees Celsius, according to the IMD. The highest temperature in the nation’s capital on Thursday was 21.4 degrees Celsius, which is one degree warmer than usual.
School Closures in Bitter Cold
In the bitter cold, Gautam Buddh Nagar, which includes Noida and Greater Noida, schools are still closed. On December 29 and 30, the district administration mandated that schools be closed to students. Teachers and other staff members would work, though. Images shared on social media revealed people in Delhi’s shelter homes sleeping. In the vicinity of the Indira Gandhi International Airport, visibility was nearly totally cut off at midnight on Thursday, according to a video released by the news agency ANI.
Improvement in Delhi Airport Conditions
But things have changed for the better recently. At the time of writing this report, the runways at Delhi Airport had a range of 400 to 800 metres, and visibility was 150 metres. Due to poor visibility on Thursday, there were two separate road accidents in Uttar Pradesh that resulted in at least six fatalities and twelve injuries, according to police and news agency PTI. Due to poor visibility caused by heavy fog, at least four people were killed and six injured in separate road crashes in Uttar Pradesh earlier in the day.
Met Department’s Dense Fog Advisory
The Met Department has issued an advisory for dense fog, advising drivers to use fog lights and travellers to keep track of airline, railway and state transportation schedules. “Exercise caution while driving or using any mode of transportation,” according to the IMD.
