the presidency (Presidential ElectionsMany Left parties, including the CPI-M, have announced their support to former Union Finance Minister and former Trinamool Congress leader Yashwant Sinha in the election. This has led to discontent among the lower level workers of the party. CPI(M)CPI-M) Many leaders of the BJP are openly expressing their anger on social media and questioning the support to Yashwant Sinha, although the Left has no representative from Bengal in the Lok Sabha and no member in the assembly itself. West Bengal has only one CPI(M) MP in the Rajya Sabha. He is Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, former mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation and is the only MP in Bengal who will vote in the presidential election.
On the nomination of Yashwant Sinha, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya said, “The party wanted a candidate for opposition unity. We had to take a stand on the question of unity of the opposition at the national level, but the selection of the candidate has not been done properly.” Although Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya refrained from commenting further, the anger of the local Left leader is clearly visible on social media.
CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress are rival parties in Bengal
Let us tell you that Trinamool Congress is the ruling party in West Bengal and Mamata Banerjee has won power by defeating CPI(M). CPI(M) has a fight with TMC in Bengal. In such a situation, questions are being raised on the support of the Trinamool Congress nominated and former Trinamool Congress leader for the post of President. Let us inform that Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had called upon the opposition parties to unite and field a candidate against the BJP’s presidential candidate. A meeting was held in Delhi in this regard. The name of NCP chief Sharad Pawar was proposed earlier in the meeting. After that National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah and Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi were proposed respectively, but all three rejected the proposal.
Yashwant Sinha joined TMC after breaking ties with BJP
After this the name was proposed to Yashwant Sinha on behalf of Mamta Banerjee. On which all the parties agreed and he has been made a joint candidate by the opposition. But the last three leaders Sharad Pawar, Farooq Abdullah and Gopalkrishna Gandhi had no contact with the TMC, but the current candidate Yashwant Sinha was the TMC’s vice-president. For this reason, the local leaders of CPI(M) objected that the support of the former TMC leader would send a wrong message at the local level. Let us tell you that Yashwant Sinha is a former IAS officer. He has been a minister in many governments including Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was also in BJP earlier, but left BJP in the year 2018 and joined Trinamool Congress. He was the Vice President of Trinamool Congress. He has resigned from the Trinamool Congress after his name was proposed for the post of President.
