According to an estimate, paddy is cultivated in an area of 1.80 lakh hectares every year in Amritsar district of Punjab. Out of this, direct sown paddy has been done in only 5000 hectares. The area under DSR technology in this Kharif season is almost the same as it was last year. Enthused by the announcement of financial assistance by the Chief Minister, the District Agriculture Department had claimed to bring 65,000 hectares under DSR technology. However, the farmers of the district have not shown much interest in the technology. Paddy sown with DSR technology requires less water and helps in water conservation.
Water is saved and cost comes down
Agricultural scientists claim that the paddy sown with DSR technology gives the same yield as the traditional transplanting method. Farmers told that this year only those who have experience about DSR technology have used this technique. Farmer Joginder Singh told The Tribune that certainly more farmers are using DSR technology, but the numbers are still very less. Another farmer said that the labor charge for transplanting paddy in the traditional way ranges between Rs 3500 to Rs 5000 per acre. Despite this, farmers are hesitant to adopt DSR technology. The cost in DSR technique is much less as compared to traditional method of transplanting.
