Amid escalating protests, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh defended the plan, saying it has been implemented after extensive consultations with ex-servicemen. He said that this scheme will bring revolutionary change in the recruitment process of soldiers. No compromise will be made on the quality of training provided to the recruited personnel under the scheme. The Defense Minister said that this scheme has been implemented after consultation with the ex-servicemen for almost two years.
First know, what will the Agniveers get under the scheme?
Under the Agneepath scheme, the jawans will be recruited on contract basis for four years, after which 75 percent of them will be given compulsory retirement without pension. The remaining 25 percent will be retained for regular service. These jawans will be selected on the basis of their performance. The government says that ‘Agniveer’ is not only the name of the soldiers who are recruited in the armed forces, but they will also be given the same quality training which is being given to the army personnel today. The training time may be short but the quality will not be compromised.

What will Agniveer do after 4 years of service?
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that the personnel to be recruited under the scheme will be given priority in various jobs in state governments, private industries, public sector undertakings and paramilitary forces. They will be given priority in jobs in various government departments, he said. In addition to the financial package of Rs 11.71 lakh to be given to each ‘Agniveer’ after completion of four years’ tenure, if additional resources are required to start new ventures, he said. If so, the government will also provide the facility of providing loans at low interest rates. Rajnath Singh said, ‘Our government is making such schemes that when Agniveer retires after four years of service, he will get employment.’
And what will you get?
- Preference will be given to interested Agniveers for pursuing further studies with Class 12 equivalent certificate and course of choice.
- Aspiring Agniveers after completion of service will be given priority in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Assam Rifles and in many states police and allied forces.
- Agniveers will be given work experience and skill training in various fields like engineering, mechanics, law and order.
- Major companies and private sector companies have announced that they would like to hire a skilled and disciplined Agniveer.
