Necklaces come in diverse forms and sizes. If your favorite piece of jewellery is a beautiful necklace, read the article to know their rich history and heritage. Necklaces have existed since the dawn of civilization. They are, and always have been, prized possessions that are worn by both men and women. Since a necklace acquires the most prominent spot on your body, they tend to be extravagant and attention-grabbing.

You can find the best collection of necklaces at Mia by Tanishq among many other jewellery stores. Did you know that ancient necklaces were made of organic materials like stones, bones, teeth, and plants, to name a few? Let us look at the history of necklaces and how they have always been important.

Early History

The oldest necklace, traced by a team of archaeologists, dates back to the stone age. Most ancient necklaces are fashioned out of natural substances like teeth and bones. Gold started coming into use to make necklaces later. Archeologists first found traces of gold necklaces and chokers in Iraq.

As it seems, the ancient Egyptians were also very fond of necklaces; they were of immense importance to them. Typically, they wore heavy gold collar necklaces at prominent funerary, religious, and celebratory events. Necklaces were not just decorative pieces but also held different meanings in different faiths.

The necklaces made with colorful gemstones and precious metals were decorative representations of prestige, power, and wealth. From the 15th century to the 17th century, men wore necklaces more significantly than women. Things began to change with the onset of the 18th century, necklaces became more common among women.

Women started wearing necklaces paired with other ornaments, but necklaces were mostly saved for the evening. By the time it was the 20th century, jewellery sets had become less important with the rise of minimal jewellery trends. Gold was significantly seen in Greek culture as well. However, Rome had strict laws on the number of jewellery women could wear at once and how much could be buried with the deceased.

Symbolism of Necklaces

In 3000 B.C.E, metals like silver, gold, and copper were melted and molded into different shapes. With this, the production of magical totems and amulets began to grow, which promoted long life and prosperity. The Egyptians especially kept their jewellery close to their heart as it accompanied them to their afterlife. The ornaments determined the individual’s wealth in the afterlife. It is believed that necklaces are the most important piece of adornment in jewellery as they are the closest to your heart, quite literally.

Diverse cultures hold different symbolism when it comes to necklaces, it is a history branching out to distinct parts of the ancient world. Overall, necklaces have made their way through history into modern times. Flourishing in all the timelines, decorating all necks with grace.

Lustrous and Graceful, all the way!

Today, necklaces are widely used as gifts and as mentioned above, decorate our necks. Brides get jewellery sets with heavy necklaces as gifts and wearing them is an important part of their marital journey. It is safe to say that modernism has tweaked the spiritual embodiment of its symbolism.

It has become more ceremonial and a showcase of wealth, but with the onset of modern times, the design evolution has been extraordinary, fitting well into today’s time.

Buying jewellery is always a promising idea; having many options makes the purchase even more worth it. Mia by Tanishq ensures a quality that suffices the significance and symbolism of necklaces in their true essence.
