Why and how was the Mughal Garden built?
The Viceroy House was designed by Edward Lutyens. With its construction, a special flower garden was prepared in the Viceroy House, but Lady Hardinge, wife of the then Viceroy Lord Hardinge, did not like this garden much. Later a new map of the garden was prepared. Edward Lutyens finalized its map in 1917 and it took 11 years to be ready. It was completed in 1928.
In the initial phase, common people were not given entry in this. The country’s first President Dr. Rajendra Prasad gave the green signal to introduce the beauty of the Mughal Gardens to the common people. Since then it has become a tradition and now it is opened for the common people in February and March.
Why was the name of the Mughals given?
There is also a special reason why it was named after the Mughals. The Mughal emperor Firoz Shah Tughlaq, carrying forward the Mughal traditions, built 1200 gardens in the country. Mughals built many gardens in Delhi too. It has many names like Shalimar Bagh, Sahibabad or Begum Bagh, which are symbols of Mughal rule with flora.
According to the Rashtrapati Bhavan website, Edward Lutyens combined British ingenuity with Islamic heritage when designing this majestic garden. The design of the Mughal Gardens was inspired by the gardens of the Taj Mahal, the gardens of Jammu and Kashmir, and paintings from India and Persia. According to media reports, there was a trend of naming gardens after Mughals during that period and keeping in mind the same heritage, it was named Mughal Garden.
