Even small incidents can bring a big change, the foundation of food delivery app Zomato was also laid like this. Surprisingly, the founder of this company, Deepinder Goyal, was not particularly interested in studies. He failed in class 6th and 11th. This was the first incident that forced Deepinder to do something in life and become something. Taking lessons from his mistakes, he decided to study diligently and worked hard day and night to qualify IIT.
After completing his studies, he started his career with the multinational firm ‘Brain and Company’ in 2006. During the job, he noticed that at the time of lunch, there was a long line in the canteen for the menu card. To solve this problem, he posted the menu card on the website so that people could order by looking at the card online. This was the turning point that brought Zomato to the market.
This is how the company started
Liked the initiative of online menu card on the website. From this he got the idea to launch such a website where information about the restaurant and the menu can be known. In this way, in 2008, together with his friend Pankaj Chadha, he opened a website named Foodibe. In which the restaurant’s menu was also reviewed. Gradually people liked his work so much that the traffic of the website increased up to three times.
The website became so popular in the food sector that restaurants themselves started uploading their own menu cards. By 2008, more than 1400 restaurants had registered. However, most of them were from Delhi NCR. Gradually, restaurants in many big cities of the country including Mumbai and Kolkata were included in it. Due to increasing popularity, both of them left the job and started working on it.
This is how Zomato became Foodiebe
In 2010, Sanjeev Bikhchandani, the founder of Infoage, invested one million dollars in the company. After this other companies also expressed their willingness to invest in it. Due to the similar name, in 2010, when a legal notice was given to the e-commerce company eBay Foodibe, it said to change the name.
After this notice, Foodibe was renamed Zomato. The company changed completely as soon as its name was changed. Made history of success in India. It became a food aggregator company i.e. a company that has nothing of its own and works to take food from restaurants and deliver it to the people.
Zomato reaches 24 countries
After getting success in India, Founder Deepinder planned to take it to other countries. In 2012 the company reached Turkey and Brazil. In the last 10 years, this company has expanded to 24 countries. These include New Zealand, Philippines, UAE, Australia, Sri Lanka, Qatar and Indonesia.
Zomato not only expanded the company but also bought many domestic and foreign companies. These include Uber Eats and grocery venture Blinkit Fitso.
