In the first phase of setting up charging stations for electric vehicles, cities that fall under the category of mega-cities and have a population of more than 40 lakhs will be taken up. According to the railway document, the work of making EV charging stations will be started in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Surat. The work of making the charging station is likely to be finished by December 2024.
Emphasis is being laid on increasing the number of EV vehicles from the government so that petrol and diesel vehicles can be reduced from the roads. The government is emphasizing on EVs to meet the rising inflation of petrol and diesel and the huge expenditure on the import of such fuel. For this, in one way, the government is promoting the manufacture and sale of EV vehicles, on the other hand, people are being relieved from the problem of charging by building charging stations.
In the second phase of the railway, charging stations will be built in those cities and stations where the population is more than one million. The second phase of building the charging station will start in December 2025. In this, those cities and mega cities will be selected where the population is more than 10 lakhs. Along with this, other cities of the country will also be included in this. By December 2026, railways will install EV charging stations at many stations in the country. For this, the zonal railway stations have been given the responsibility of preparing and sharing the report.
Work is being done on two types of planning for setting up EV charging stations at stations. First, the zonal railway under which the station will come, that zone will be given the budget for setting up EV charging stations. The work of making the charging station will be entirely the responsibility of the zonal section. In the second planning, charging stations will be built at stations in developer mode. For this, charge point operators will be selected who will pay the license rent to the railways and earn from it by building charging stations according to their own.
