From Sangh Swayamsevak to participation in movements
Keshari Nath Tripathi remained active in the politics of Uttar Pradesh for more than 40 years. Born on 10 November 1934, Keshari Nath Tripathi joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in his teens. He was the youngest of his seven siblings. In 1952, he joined Bharatiya Jana Sangh as a worker and started working actively as a worker.
He also participated in the Kashmir movement in that period and due to this he had to go to jail. At the same time, he also had an active participation in the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Due to this, he was arrested and he remained in jail from 23 October 1990 to 10 November 1990.
Beginning of victory from Bar Association
His studies started from the Central Hindu School in Allahabad. Then he studied from second to eighth grade from Saryuparin School. He did high school from Agarwal Inter College in 1949 and then intermediate in 1951. In 1953, he did his BA from Allahabad University and then also completed LLB from here.
After studying law, he started practice and then got registered as an advocate there. In 1956, he contested the Allahabad Bar Association elections and was elected Joint Secretary. After this, he was also elected the president of the association for three years. Received D.Litt (D.Litt.) from Meerut University and honorary degree of LLD from Rajarshi Tandon Open University.
MLA, Minister, Speaker and then Governor
In 1977, he won the election for the first time from the Jhusi assembly of the city on a Janata Party ticket and reached the UP assembly after being elected as an MLA. He was also the Finance and Sales Tax minister in the Uttar Pradesh government. In 1989, he won the assembly elections from the City Southern Assembly.
After this, he was an MLA in 1991, 1993, 1996 and 2002 as well and became the Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly thrice. He took charge of the speaker from 1991 to 1993, 1997 to 2002 and from May 2002 to March 2004. In 2004, he was also made the state president of BJP. However, in the elections held in 2007, he lost the election to the then BSP candidate Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi. Then the governor was made.
