The full name of EVM is Electronic Voting Machine. EVM was first used in India in 1982. Now these machines have taken the place of ballot paper. However, questions have been constantly raised on the reliability of EVMs. Especially political parties raise a lot of questions on EVMs. At the same time, many types of questions remain in the minds of the people regarding the EVM machine. What is EVM machine?
Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) is an electronic machine for recording votes. Electronic Voting Machines are made up of two units (Control Unit and Balloting Unit), which are connected by a five-metre cable. EVMs are stand alone machines that can run alone, and do not have any kind of network.
How to cast vote from EVM machine?
The Control Unit of the EVM is kept with the Presiding Officer (RO) or Polling Officer and the Ballot Unit is kept inside the voting compartment. Instead of giving the ballot paper, the polling officer in charge of the control unit presses a button on the control unit. After this the voter can cast his vote by pressing the blue button on the ballot unit in front of the candidate and mark of his choice.
Who has designed the EVM?
The EVMs have been prepared and designed by the Technical Expert Committee (TEC) of the Election Commission in collaboration with two government companies – Bharat Electronics Limited (BHEL), Bengaluru and Electronic Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), Hyderabad. BHEL and ECIL only make EVM machines.
What is Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT)?
VVPAT is used to make voting more concrete. When a vote is cast, a slip containing the name, serial number and mark of the candidate is printed and visible through a transparent window for 7 seconds. After that this printed slip is automatically cut and falls in the sealed drop box of VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail).
Can EVM machine be tampered with or hacked?
EVM is a One Time Programmable (OTP) machine, which is neither controlled by a computer nor connected to the Internet or any other network. That’s why they cannot be hacked. This machine is electronically secured to prevent tampering or tampering with it. The software used in these machines is burned into a One Time Programmable (OTP)/masked chip. This is done so that it cannot be changed or tampered with.
What orders has the court given on EVM?
Several cases have been filed in different High Courts regarding the reliability of EVMs. Various High Courts of the country gave decisions in favor of EVMs. In 2017, the Supreme Court also dismissed the appeals filed by some of the petitioners while upholding the High Court orders in favor of EVMs.
