A time came when Kejriwal was accused of taking decisions alone. He was called the ‘Supreme Leader’. In the midst of this discord, leaders like Prashant Bhushan, Yogendra Yadav, Anand Kumar and Ajit Jha parted ways with the party.
story of aam aadmi party
Anna movement You will remember! against corruption Jan Lokpal Act Kishan Bapat Bapurao aka Anna Hazare had entered Delhi for the first time. He was being compared to Gandhiji. People kept joining. Got support from across the country. The Congress government at the center was shaken. There was a special face among millions of common people standing with Anna Hazare. Arvind kejriwal Of. Kejriwal, who had revolutionized RTI i.e. Right to Information, was called ‘Arjun’ of Anna at that time. Today that Arjun is standing firmly in national politics.
After several rounds of talks with the government during the long-running Anna movement, the Jan Lokpal law could not be enacted. Eventually Arvind Kejriwal decided to form a political party and on 26 November 2012 launched his political party named ‘Aam Aadmi Party’. Kejriwal got the support of leaders and friends like Yogendra Yadav, Prashant Bhushan, Kumar Vishwas gathered on the platform of Anna movement. Elections were about to be held in Delhi. There was a lot of propaganda. The people of Delhi saw a ray of hope in AAP and the party formed the government in Delhi on this day in 2013.
The party of compulsion emerged strongly
At the time of party formation, Arvind Kejriwal had said that all the parties are cheating the country and the country will not be corruption free during his tenure. That’s why we have formed the party under compulsion. The common people’s party, formed under compulsion, has become a national party with strength today and has become ‘special’ in the politics of the country.
The date of December 28 is very important in the history of Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi politics. Within 13 months of forming the party, on this date in 2013, the Aam Aadmi Party formed the government in Delhi. Anna’s ‘Arjun’ Arvind Kejriwal had now become the Chief Minister. AAP also had to take the support of the Congress to form the government in Delhi. Although the Congress had given unconditional support to keep the BJP away from power, yet questions were bound to arise on this alliance.
Kejriwal’s first masterstroke
Allegations started being leveled against you that the party which participated in the movement against the Congress, formed the government with the same party against which it fought the elections. Things started deteriorating even within the coalition and this mismatched government could run for only 49 days. Arvind Kejriwal resigned on 14 February 2014. Said- There is no majority in the assembly, so after the re-election, we will return with full majority.
This proved to be Kejriwal’s first masterstroke. The people of Delhi are once again with you whole heartedly. When the elections were held again in 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party surprised everyone by winning 67 out of 70 seats. Kejriwal once again emerged as a strong leader and became the Chief Minister.
Missed Kumar, Prashant Bhushan, Yogendra
As soon as he came to power in 2015, CM Kejriwal made electricity and water free in Delhi. Looted accolades by starting many schemes. Although this majority got in the election also could not stop the ‘split’ in the party. Colleagues started having objections on many issues. Kejriwal was accused of taking decisions alone. Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav called Kejriwal a ‘supreme leader’. In the midst of this discord, leaders like Prashant Bhushan, Yogendra Yadav, Anand Kumar and Ajit Jha parted ways with the party.
A time also came when Arvind Kejriwal, who used to call Kumar Vishwas his younger brother, also had a estrangement with him. The relationship of both started deteriorating. There was talk of sending Kumar Vishwas to Rajya Sabha in 2018, but it did not happen. Kumar Vishwas also left the party. Many other big leaders left the party.
Leaders kept leaving, caravan kept growing
Kejriwal’s colleagues and leaders were moving away from the Aam Aadmi Party, but it was not affecting Arvind Kejriwal and the party. However, the party lost all the seven seats in Delhi in the Lok Sabha elections. But once again amazing happened in the assembly elections. In the Delhi Assembly elections held in February 2020, the Aam Aadmi Party again performed a miracle. It lost 5 seats but winning 62 out of 70 seats was also a big deal.
Government in Punjab, strong presence in other states as well
After Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party targeted Punjab. Here he once again gave a sharp edge to the politics pitched against the Congress. The infighting of the Congress also benefited the party and finally the Aam Aadmi Party got victory in the assembly elections. Earlier, by winning two seats, the party had got the status of a regional party in Goa as well. Recently, when the results of the Gujarat assembly elections came, there was a strong presence of the party here too. The Aam Aadmi Party won five seats here.
national party but not a single MP
AAP, which has achieved the status of a regional party in Delhi, Punjab and Goa, has also achieved the status of a national party by winning 5 seats in the Gujarat elections. Within 10 years, the party made its mark. However, the party’s score in the Lok Sabha is still zero.
If we add 62 MLAs in Delhi, 92 in Punjab, 5 in Gujarat and two in Goa, it has a total of 161 MLAs across the country. Along with this, the Aam Aadmi Party is now in possession of the Delhi MCD as well. The party has 10 members in the Rajya Sabha. The only MP from the party, Bhagwant Mann, was in the Lok Sabha, but had to resign from the Lok Sabha after becoming the chief minister in March this year. Along with the Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan elections, the Aam Aadmi Party is also eyeing the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
