The purpose of social science in school education is to develop disciplinary knowledge and understanding. Such as how society functions through the interaction of historical, geographical, social, economic. Political factors, as it has been recommended that important design considerations in the development of textbooks on history, geography, economics etc. should be truly and widely representative with verifiable evidence.
According to the recommendation, 20% of the social science curriculum in middle school is to be derived from the local context, 30% from each regional and national context, and 20% from the global context. The draft NCF 2023 also states that the information given in the chapters is given in the classroom, which has little or no relation to the immediate life of the student.
Another pressing issue with the social sciences is that the content of the textbooks is not based on facts derived from investigation and inquiry. While there is often conflicting evidence to understand a particular social phenomenon. Emphasizing only one piece of evidence often gives an unbalanced/inadequate picture, as it recommends material that is broadly representative of verifiable evidence. Submitted chapter-wise suggestions for content in the draft NCF.
