Jamia Millia Islamia University has banned the entry of research scholar and activist Safoora Zargar into the university campus. A few days back, the university had canceled Safoora’s MPhil admission on the grounds of non-submission of dissertation. Safoora and other Jamia students were protesting after the MPhil admission was cancelled. The protesting students said that Safoora Zargar should be given admission in MPhil and they should also get extra time to submit their thesis.
Jamia University said in its order that the demonstrations were organized by Safoora, due to which they have been banned from coming to the campus. “It has been observed that Safoora Zargar along with some outside students has been involved in organizing agitations, protests and marches in the campus against irrelevant and objectionable issues to disturb the peaceful academic environment,” the order said. She is instigating the students of the university and along with some other students is trying to use the university for her political agenda.
Safoora was arrested under UAPA
The university further said, “Besides, Safoora Zargar is obstructing the normal functioning of the institute. Keeping this matter in mind, the Competent Authority has banned former student Safoora Zargar from coming to the campus with immediate effect in order to maintain a peaceful academic environment in the campus. Safoora Zargar was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in April 2020 in connection with the Delhi riots. However, Safoora was granted bail in June 2020 on humanitarian grounds, as she was pregnant at that time.
At the same time, the Jamia University administration has issued show cause notices to several students who took part in the demonstration regarding the re-admission of Safoora Zargar. In a written order, the proctor of the university said that the participation of several students in the protest in support of Zargar is a “gross violation of the rules and regulations of Jamia and is looked into separately by the Jamia authorities”.
