Air India and Vistara Merger: Tata Sons-owned Vistara and Air India have started the process of their merger as both the airlines are looking to expedite the process of merger. consultancy firm Deloitte A team of senior executives from Air India and Vistara has initiated the process of merging human resources, while law firm AZB Partners is working on the legal and regulatory compliances.
Last year, Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Tata Group announced a merger between Air India and Vistara, with SIA holding 25.1% of the merged entity. The merger is expected to be completed by March 2024. Vistara is a 51:49 joint venture between the Tata group and Singapore Airlines. As part of the human integration process, Vistara’s non-flying employees are being assessed through a process called the Hogan Test, designed by US-based firm Hogan.
Team managers and members reporting directly to management have already been assessed and the next level of employees will be assessed for their potential roles in the next few weeks, said a person in the know. Since both airlines had officers in the same role, there is a need to carefully evaluate who will be given a leadership or managerial role.
joint meeting will be held
Air India and Vistara have also organized a joint town hall with pilots of the two airlines next week to discuss seniority and career progression after the merger of the two entities. Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan said that considering the seriousness of the seamless integration of flight operations, we are planning a special town hall with the pilots on March 2 from 12 noon to 1 pm, to discuss the flight operations integration and address queries. Proposed roadmap can be shared for its solution.
seniority based on time of employment
Pilots of both the airlines say that the seniority of pilots is directly related to their career progression and could become a tough issue after the merger. Seniority depends on the time of employment of a pilot with a specific airline. If a pilot changes an airline, seniority starts all over again, irrespective of his flying experience. Many things like choice of base, choice of aircraft and progression from a narrow body to a broad body depend on the seniority list.
Both airlines also working on regulatory compliance
Vistara pilots are worried about what will happen to their seniority after the merger and some clarity is needed. Both the airlines are also working on regulatory compliance as the merger would require approval from global competition regulators where both the airlines operate like Germany, UK and Singapore. Apart from this, it needs approval from DGCA, CCI and NCLT.
