Tea Export: India’s tea producing farmers are using more pesticides, export may get a big push in the international market. There is also a problem in the export of Basmati rice due to the high amount of pesticides.
After wheat and rice, now more use of pesticides has spoiled the image of Indian tea. Many countries have returned the consignment of Indian tea. Because the maximum residue level of pesticide in it (MRL-Maximum Residue Limit) was more than the prescribed amount. In a conversation with PTI, Indian Tea Exporters Association (ITEA) President Anshuman Kanoria has given this information. Earlier, the Indian Basmati Rice business in Europe was also hit due to the use of more pesticides. Since then, the central government has been making farmers cultivating Basmati paddy aware about what to do so that the use of pesticides is negligible.
Actually, in many countries there are strict rules regarding the level of pesticides in food items, which they strictly follow. Whereas Indian farmers use it indiscriminately, due to which they are facing losses. Not only tea and rice, before this Turkey also returned 56,877 tonnes of Indian wheat saying that it contains rubella virus.
Shock to India in the international market
Anshuman Kanoria, president of the Association of Tea Exporters, said that India wants to make an important place in its international market by increasing tea exports in the global market to meet the shortage of tea at the international level due to the crisis in Sri Lanka. However, due to the excess of chemicals, the tea being exported may get a setback. Because many countries have returned. He said that many countries are following strict rules for tea.
Most countries follow European Union standards which are more stringent than the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). India exported 195.9 million kg of tea in the year 2021. Due to which Rs 5,246 crore was received. The Tea Board had set a target of exporting 300 million kg of tea this year.
Most Countries Follow European Standards
Kanoria told that most of the buyers are buying tea, unusually high chemicals are being found in them. On the other hand, instead of reducing the pesticide, Indian tea growers are demanding from the government to relax the FSSAI rules. This is not right, because tea is kept in the category of health drink. This is the reason that most countries of the world follow strict rules for tea. In this, most countries follow the standard of the European Union, which is much stricter than the FSSAI rules.
