How does a turbo engine work?

A turbo engine consists of a compressor wheel and a turbine wheel connected to a shaft. These components can be seen inside a snail-shaped housing with exhaust and inlet ports.
The inlet port allows exhaust gases produced from the engine to enter the turbocharger at high pressure and rotate the turbine wheel. The turbine wheel, in turn, rotates the compressor wheel, which draws a large amount of air from outside.
The compressor wheel compresses the air, which then expels it through the outlet port. After this the compressed air goes through a pipe into the cylinder, where it mixes with the fuel. After this a more powerful explosion occurs inside the combustion chamber.
The best thing about turbocharger is that it does not require separate engine power to run. Instead it uses the engine’s exhaust gases, otherwise they would have been wasted. In this way it improves engine performance and mileage without increasing fuel consumption.

Since a turbocharger operates best at high pressure and generates high temperatures, it is usually equipped with an intercooler. The intercooler acts as a tool to cool the compressed air before it reaches the cylinder. This important step helps prevent engine overheating and reduces the possibility of engine knocking.
