Ola-uber rides on peak hours will be expensive
Now the cab ride is going to be more expensive than before. Cab rides like Ola, Uber, Indrive or Rapido will pay you more than before. The central government has issued a new guideline regarding ride–hiling companies, in which the range of rent recovery has been increased. According to the Ministry of Road Transport, now these cab aggregators can charge up to two times the base fair in peak time, whereas earlier this limit was up to 1.5 times.
At the same time, a new system will also be implemented in non-piece hours, under which 50% of the minimum fare base fair has been fixed. To implement these guidelines, the central government has asked all the states to implement them in the next three months. With this, passengers will have to face more impact on pockets in peak hours, while cab aggregators will get more flexibility for their operations.
Center's new guidelines for cab services
The government has issued strict and clear guidelines regarding app based taxi services, which aim to ensure safety of passengers and protect the interests of drivers. These new rules include many significant changes, which will affect all three cab aggregators, drivers and passengers.
If you cancel the ride without reason, you will be fined
If a driver cancels the ride without a proper reason, he will be fined up to 10% of the total fare, whose maximum limit will be ₹ 100. This amount will be distributed between the driver and the cab company. The same rule will also apply to the passengers. If they cancel the booking without solid reason, then they will also have to pay this fee.
Insurance required for drivers
The government has instructed all the aggregators to provide health insurance of at least ₹ 5 lakh and a term insurance of ₹ 10 lakh to its drivers. With this, the driver will also get a financial safety if something happens during the ride.
Base fair will now decide the state government
The state government will now decide the minimum fare for services like auto and bike taxi. For example, the base fair of the taxi in Delhi and Mumbai is ₹ 20 to ₹ 21 per kilometer, while in Pune it is ₹ 18. Also, if a vehicle moves empty to the customer (dead mileage), and this distance is less than 3 kilometers, then it will not be charged much. The fare will be taken only for the distance which will be from the passenger's pickup to the destination.
Tracking device required for safety
It will now be necessary to install vehicle location and tracking device (VLTD) in every taxi and bike taxi. The data of this device will be connected not only to the server of the cab aggregator but also to the control center of the state government. This will make it possible for real-time monitoring, which will improve security.
Training required for drivers
To ensure the quality of drivers, now every driver will have to take refresher training once a year. Also, drivers whose ratings come in the lowest 5% will have to take training in every quarter. If they do not do this, then they can be prevented from serving. States have been given the next three months time to implement these guidelines.
Motor vehicle aggregator guidelines
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has released the Motor Vehicle Agricultural Guidelines 2025. Under these new guidelines, the state governments have now been empowered that they can also allow private (non-commercial) motorcycles to be included on the aggregator platforms for ride.
After this decision, people will now be able to take rides through private bikes through platforms like Ola, Uber, Rapido, if the state government allows it. This will especially increase facilities in areas where the availability of public transport is limited and bike taxi can become more effective option for short distance travel.
