Nimisha Priya
Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who hails from Kerala, is now standing on the verge of death. Nimisha, who was lodged in the jail of Yemen's capital Sana, was sentenced to death in 2020 for killing a Yemeni citizen. Now, the jail administration has made it clear that he was hanged on 16 July.
Nimisha told her husband Tommy Thomas through a message and voice note on WhatsApp that the chairman of the jail personally told him the date of punishment. The whole family is shocked by this news. On July 14, the Supreme Court of India will hear the case, that is, just two days before the hanging. Earlier, the family is constantly pleading for help from high level leaders and legal experts.
Help and sought help from governor
Tommy Thomas and Nimisha's mother Prema Kumari have been camping in Delhi for the past several days, and are knocking on every door that can save the daughter's life. On Thursday, the family met Himachal Pradesh Governor Rajendra Arlekar. The Governor assured him of all possible help and tied the emotional family. The family's effort is to intervene at the Government of India, Ministry of External Affairs or Prime Minister level, so that the punishment can be stopped by negotiating with Yemen government or Houthi officials.
Indian embassy is not in Yemen
War has been going on in Yemen for a long time and there is no Embassy of India. Sana, where Nimisha is closed, is under the possession of the Houthi rebels, making direct diplomatic interactions even more difficult. No official confirmation has been made regarding the death date from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, but the information received by the jail officials has increased the concern.
Congress wrote a letter to PM Modi
Congress leader and party's organization general secretary K.C. Venugopal has demanded immediate intervention in the case of Nimisha Priya, writing a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has written in the letter that Nimisha Priya is hanged, not justice, there is a need for injustice. He said that she became a victim of inhuman atrocities and domestic violence on foreign land. The situation brought him to the point where anyone could break. He needs to get justice not to die.
What is the case: murder, punishment and blood money expected
In 2017, Nimisha was convicted for the murder of Yamani businessman Talal Abdo Mehdi. He claims that he did this in self -defense, because he was harassing him physically and mentally. In 2023, his final appeal was rejected by Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council, but left an option that if the victim's family accepts 'blood money', the hanging could be avoided. Now the family has two ways, either relief from the court, or by giving blood money, there should be an appeal to the Yamani family.
