If the sound of tropical beaches, palm trees swaying in the wind, and crystal clear water glistening in the warm Caribbean sun sounds like your idea of a holiday, the Dominican Republic is just the place for you.

But the combination of pristine beaches, delicious food, and friendly locals all comes at a price tag and a budget traveler might be weary of exotic Caribbean destinations. But there is hope yet! The Dominican Republic won’t necessarily break the bank and there are tons of ways you can still indulge in all the best the island has to offer while pinching pennies.

The Dominican Republic offers visa-free entry to 108 nationalities with only some African and Asian visitors needing a visa. Everyone should complete the quick and easy Dominican Republic entry form and you will be on your way faster than you can say rum punch.

Here are some tips for saving money while traveling in the Dominican Republic without foregoing an ounce of adventure!

Be savvy about tourist traps

Tourist areas are notorious money traps and should almost be a no-go zone if you are trying to save money. Places like Punta Cana and Santo Domingo are beautiful, but they can also be expensive. If you’re looking to save money, consider staying in a smaller town or village for much better value for your money. You’ll get a more authentic experience, and you’ll often find that prices are lower than in bustling tourist areas. Plus, chances are that you will find quiet beaches are much higher.

Travel during the off-season

Like many tourist destinations, the Dominican Republic has a high season and a low season. If you can travel during the low season, you’ll find that prices are significantly lower. You’ll also have fewer crowds to contend with, which can make for a more relaxing and enjoyable vacation. The Dominican Republic is usually a place for people looking to escape the northern winter or spend spring break and June to November is typically the low season. The weather is hot and humid with scattered rain storms and hurricane warnings, but there is still plenty of sunshine in between and you will return home with a sunny glow.

Forget about hotels, stay in hostels or guest houses

If you’re on a tight budget, staying in a hostel or guesthouse should be your first option. These types of accommodations are usually much cheaper than hotels, and you’ll often have the opportunity to meet other travelers and share tips and advice. Just be sure to read reviews before booking to make sure you’re getting a safe and comfortable place to stay. Many of the accommodation options in the Dominican Republic are all-inclusive resorts or high-end hotels but these take away from the wealth of authenticity and adventure the country has to offer.

Eat as the locals do

One of the best ways to save money while traveling to any country is to eat like a local. Street food is a great dining option in the Dominican Republic, and you’ll find that it’s often much cheaper than eating at restaurants. This is also the best way to get a true sense of your destination and experience the culture firsthand. This is also your best chance of making some local friends who might show you a thing or two about their fabulous country. Look for local markets and street vendors, and don’t be afraid to try new things. You might just discover your new favorite dish!

Skip taxis and use public transport

Taxis and rental cars can be expensive in the Dominican Republic, but public transportation is much cheaper and easy to navigate. Buses and minibusses are available throughout the country and offer the best and most affordable way to get around. This is by no means a luxury option and things can quickly get crowded, not to mention some long wait times on occasion. Considering it is less than 200 miles from the north to the south of the country, you won’t be stuck on a bus for ages and you will quickly be back on the beach enjoying your budget-friendly holiday.

Take advantage of free activities

The Dominican Republic is full of free activities that can help you save money while still having a great time. Beaches are usually free to access, and you can spend hours swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the beautiful scenery. Hiking and exploring nature are also great options. Look for free walking tours or pack your own snorkel and mask to go snorkeling for free right from the beach. You can also explore the beautiful colonial zones on your own and it won’t cost a dime.
