Martyr's Day being celebrated for the first time
In fact, this year, under the newly elected National Conference Government, Martyr's Day is being celebrated for the first time, which was formally requested to go to the cemetery in Srinagar, and re -implemented as a public holiday today. This day holds a deep historical significance in Kashmir, as it is celebrated in memory of the sacrifice of 22 civilians killed in protests against Dogra rule in 1931.
Entry in cemetery restricted
Before the cancellation of Article 370 in 2019, Martyr's Day was officially recognized with state ceremonies and public holidays. However, since then, the Lieutenant Governor -led administration has canceled this holiday and banned entry into the cemetery for political leaders.
Dogra army bullets martyred
The ruling National Conference (NC) in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday claimed that the District Magistrate of Srinagar has refused to pay tribute to 22 people martyred by the army of the then Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh on 13 July 1931. Meanwhile, People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti paid tribute to the people who were martyred with Dogra Army bullets on Saturday.
The NC said that he had applied to the District Magistrate and sought permission to party president Farooq Abdullah and other senior officials on Sunday to go to the martyrs' tombs in the map near Nauhatta.
Refusal to allow applicants
Srinagar Police issued a post public consultation on the Social Media Forum X saying that the Srinagar district administration on Sunday refused to allow all the applicants wishing to go towards Khwaja Bazar, Nauhatta. Police said that the general public is advised to strictly follow these instructions and avoid violating the orders issued by the district administration. The police warned that strict action will be taken under the relevant provisions of the law for violating these orders in any way.
Iltija Mufti said in a post on X that knowing that we would be prevented from going out, we managed to pay tribute to our martyrs, who sacrificed our lives for democracy on 13 July 1931. Mufti also shared a video in which she is seen offering flowers on the graves of some martyrs of July 13, 1931.
Erase memories deliberately
Mufti said that his memories are being deliberately erased, yet his voice resonates in the heart of every Kashmiri who refuses to bow down and maintains hope. Last year, many leaders, including Mehbooba Mufti, were placed under house arrest to prevent the tombs from going to the tombs.
Public holiday in Kashmir
In August 2019, there was a public holiday in Jammu and Kashmir on 13 July before the then state was reorganized in two union territories. A state ceremony was organized every year in honor of the people martyred by the Maharaja's army bullets. However, the administration removed this day from the list of holidays in 2020. On this day, the mainstream political leaders also visited the martyrs' grave and paid tribute to the Kashmiris who were victims of the Dogra army bullets opposing the Maharaja's rule.
