Customers who have Jan Dhan account with State Bank of India (SBI) are getting free life insurance of Rs 2 lakh. SBI is giving life insurance of Rs 2 lakh to its customers with RuPay Debit Card on opening of Jan Dhan account. If there is an accident abroad with the account holder and he dies abroad, even then 2 lakh rupees will be given to the nominee.
For those who have opened a Jan Dhan account in SBI before August 28, 2018, the life insurance amount is fixed at Rs 1 lakh. Customers who have opened Jan Dhan account after this date are being given insurance of Rs 2 lakh by SBI. This insurance is absolutely free for both the account holders.
Multiple feature on one card
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 28 August 2014. The Jan Dhan account was started keeping in mind that the poor or underprivileged people of the country should also be financially strengthened and they should be connected with the banking system. PMJDY is a government scheme in which customers are provided with savings account, insurance, money transactions, credit and other facilities.

How to claim insurance
There are certain rules for claiming free life insurance of 2 lakhs. If something happens to the account holder and they leave the world, then 90 days before that day one or the other transaction with Rupay debit card should be successful. It is a rule to have this transaction in own bank or between any other bank. After the necessary documents are submitted in the bank, 2 lakh rupees of life insurance are given to the nominee. If the incident happens outside the country also, then the nominee will get Rs 2 lakh.
Documents for opening Jan Dhan account
The process of KYC for opening Jan Dhan account has been kept very simple. You can open a Jan Dhan account in SBI or any other bank after submitting any one of the documents mentioned below-
- driving license
- pan card
- Aadhar card
- Voters ID Card
- Job card issued by NREGA with state government stamp
- ID card issued by central or state government, statutory or regulatory authority, government company, commercial bank, government financial institution
- Letter with attested photograph signed by gazetted officer
Even if none of these documents are there, a small account can be opened. A letter with self attested photograph bearing self signature or thumb impression.
