Devendra Fadnavis government of Maharashtra is preparing to take strict steps on cow slaughter. The government is going to bring strict laws like imposing MCOCA against cow slaughter. On Monday, there was a discussion about cow slaughter in the Legislative Council, in which BJP MLA Shrikant Bhartiya raised this issue and said that a law should be made on this.
Responding to the question raised by the BJP MLA, State Minister of State for Home Affairs Pankaj Bhoyar assured and said that the government will soon bring strict laws regarding cow slaughter. Apart from this, whoever is found involved in cow slaughter will also be engaged in MCOCA. The minister said that 2498 cases related to cow slaughter, transport and beef sales have been registered in the state from 2022 to June 2025.
In the Legislative Council, the Minister of State for Home (Rural) further informed that the accused arrested for the third crime like cow slaughter, smuggling and sale will be imposed on the accused. He also informed that the government will bring laws to curb cow smuggling and it will be passed in the upcoming session. Apart from this, the case already registered against the guards who voluntarily social work will be studied and the cases will be withdrawn against them.
CM had already announced
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also announced in March this year that Maharashtra organized crime control act (MCOCA) would be imposed against those involved in cow slaughter and cow smuggling in the state. Speaking in the assembly, the Chief Minister had said that the state government is keeping a close watch on the cases of cow smuggling and strict action will be taken against the criminals involved in this crime.
NCP MLA raised this issue
This issue was raised in the assembly on behalf of NCP MLA Sangram Jagtap. He raised this issue through a proposal. During this, he also mentioned Atik Qureshi, who was constantly involved in cow smugglers. Then Bhoil had told him that there were 20 cases of cow smuggling against Qureshi in Ahilyanagar. He was arrested in January, but on March 1, he was again released on bail. Meanwhile, CM Fadnavis intervened and assured that the police will be instructed to make allegations against habitual criminals like Qureshi under MCOCA.
What is MCOCA law?
The MCOCA law is the famous and very strict law of Maharashtra. The Maharashtra Organized Crime Control Act, 1999 is used to deal with mafia activities and underworld activities. This law is specially designed to deal with organized crime. It is used against those involved in crimes such as forced recovery, murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking or illegal business for financial benefits.
