With the holy month of Shravan underway, Kanwar Yatra 2025 has commenced across North India, drawing lakhs of devotees—known as Kanwariyas—who walk barefoot or travel by vehicles to fetch holy water from the Ganga and offer it to Lord Shiva. As the yatra gains momentum, state governments including Uttar Pradesh have made elaborate arrangements to ensure the safety and convenience of pilgrims.
However, amidst the spiritual fervour, there are several common mistakes that devotees must avoid to ensure a smooth and respectful pilgrimage
1. Disregarding Traffic and Civic Rules
One of the most frequent issues seen during the Kanwar Yatra is reckless driving, blocking roads, and using loud music systems on vehicles. Authorities have strictly banned DJs and high-decibel speakers during the yatra. Violators may face heavy fines or vehicle seizure. Devotees are advised to follow the dedicated Kanwar routes and avoid obstructing general traffic.
2. Littering or Damaging Public Property
Devotees must maintain cleanliness along the yatra route. Throwing plastic bottles, food wrappers, or damaging public installations reflects poorly on the religious spirit of the event. The administration has deployed cleanliness squads, but the primary responsibility still lies with the yatris.
3. Ignoring Health and Hydration
Many Kanwariyas walk over 100 kilometres, often under the scorching sun or heavy rains. Skipping water breaks or failing to wear proper footwear (in case of non-mourning Kanwars) may lead to dehydration or injuries. Carrying basic first aid, electrolytes, and staying well-rested is vital.
4. Overcrowding Temples Without Coordination
Rushing into temples without following queues or local guidelines causes unnecessary chaos. Many temples, including prominent ones like Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi), Baba Baidyanath Dham (Deoghar), and Haridwar temples, witness lakhs of visitors per day. Devotees should cooperate with temple authorities and security forces for a smooth darshan.
5. Not Respecting Locals and Fellow Devotees
The yatra often passes through residential areas and market roads. Maintaining discipline, avoiding altercations, and respecting locals’ space is critical. The Kanwar Yatra is about devotion, humility, and collective spirituality.
Government Appeals for Responsible Conduct
The Uttar Pradesh Police and local administrations across states like Uttarakhand, Bihar, Delhi, and Haryana have urged devotees to follow safety protocols and refrain from unruly behaviour. Special security arrangements, medical camps, and resting shelters have been set up across all major Kanwar routes.
As the Yatra progresses, the authorities are relying not only on deployment but also on self-discipline and cooperation from devotees to maintain the sanctity and peace of the sacred journey.
