Delhi-NCR witnessed relentless heavy rainfall on Saturday evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a ‘Red Alert’ for the region. The national capital and its adjoining areas, including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad, were brought to a near standstill due to waterlogging, traffic snarls, and disrupted public transport.
IMD Warns of More Showers, Flash Flood-Like Situations
According to the IMD, Delhi is likely to continue experiencing intense rainfall over the next 24 hours. The red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall, which could lead to flooding in low-lying areas, falling trees, and power disruptions. Residents have been advised to stay indoors unless necessary, and commuters are urged to avoid waterlogged roads and take public transport only after checking operational status.
The rainfall, which began in the early evening hours, intensified rapidly, leading to severe water accumulation in major junctions such as I.T.O, Minto Road, Lajpat Nagar, Dhaula Kuan, and AIIMS. Videos circulating on social media showed cars submerged, buses stranded, and pedestrians wading through knee-deep water.
Delhi Government and NDRF on High Alert
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), along with municipal corporations, has deployed teams to pump out water and assist stranded commuters. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is also on standby in vulnerable zones.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal held an emergency meeting with officials from the PWD, MCD, and Delhi Jal Board, instructing them to ensure quick drainage and provide relief measures.
The IMD also forecast lightning and gusty winds in the region, urging residents to avoid open areas, construction sites, and trees during storms. Schools may remain closed in some districts if the weather condition worsens.
