In a major urban beautification and safety initiative, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has launched a citywide drive to make Delhi free from overhead electric and telecom wires. Speaking at the launch event, Kejriwal emphasized that the goal is clear: “Not a single wire will be visible anywhere in Delhi.”

Underground Cabling to Begin Soon

The initiative will involve extensive underground cabling of power and communication lines, starting with key markets, colonies, and public spaces. The Chief Minister stated that the work will be carried out in phased manner, ensuring minimal disruption to public life.

Focus on Safety and Aesthetics

Officials highlighted that tangled and exposed wires not only spoil the city’s appearance, but also pose fire and electrical hazards. The move is expected to drastically reduce such risks, while also contributing to better infrastructure planning and urban safety standards.

Coordination with Discoms and Telecom Companies

The Delhi government will work in close coordination with power discoms, telecom operators, and MCD to implement the project. A central task force has also been formed to monitor progress and resolve issues.

This ambitious plan aligns with the broader vision of transforming Delhi into a modern, clean, and world-class city.

The initiative has received a positive response from Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and trader bodies, particularly in areas like Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, and Kalkaji, where hanging wires have long been a cause of concern. “It’s a much-needed step. Overhead wires not only look ugly but are also dangerous, especially during rains,” said a member of the Chandni Chowk Traders Association.

Pilot Projects Already Underway

According to the Delhi Urban Development Department, pilot projects in select areas have already shown success. Underground wiring in Connaught Place and ITO has made the zones safer and more organized. These zones will now serve as models for expansion across the city.
