The cabinet has given its approval to the anti -disrespect law of religious texts in Punjab. The draft of the law that has been prepared for providing strict punishment against the cases related to untouchables has been named The Punjab Prevention of Offense Against Holy Scripture (S) Act, 2025. A 10 -year jail or life imprisonment has been provided on its violation. Strict provisions have also been made against communal riots.
In the draft prepared by the state government, a prison of at least 10 years has been proposed if found guilty of disrespect related to any religion or religious text, which can be extended to life imprisonment. According to the draft, if the accused is a minor, the parents will also be made a side.
3 to 5 years jailed even after trying
According to the draft, a provision of 3-5 years has been provided to efforts to damage the dishonesty of the sacred book and damage to religious texts.
Communal riot if there is a fine of up to 20 lakhs
The objective of the anti-intentional law, the parents or parents, who are missing or fail to control or fail their duties of controlling or managing the parents or parents who are 'deliberately or otherwise accused the accused child or mentally deranged or disabled' have also been provided in the draft.
The draft also states that if such a crime provokes communal riots, causing loss of human life or damage to public or private property, then the punishment can be from 20 years to the remaining natural life, as well as a fine of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.
If the penalty is not filled, no parole or furrow
Also, there is no provision of parole or furls for those who get maximum punishment or not paying fine under it. If Granthi, Pathi Singh, Sevadar, Ragi, Dhadi, Manager, Pandit, Purohit, Maulvi or Pastor- who are appointed to perform religious duties related to their respective scriptures- are found guilty of any crime under this law, then they will get maximum punishment for the crime of that category.
Under this law, a case will be launched on those who conspires for disrespect or provoke it, as well as cases will be imposed on those who obstruct religious worship or religious ceremony, or harass them. The draft of the proposed law has been prepared only during the special session of this assembly.
Earlier, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, “We are preparing a draft of it for disgrace. A law will be made against it, but for this we will also talk to stakeholders, religious institutions.” He also said that we need time for the final draft. CM Mann had also said on June 28 last month that his government will bring a law with a provision of strict punishment for the acts of disrespect.
