The Election Commission (ECI) says that a large number of people were found from Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar during the verification of the voter list by going door-to-door under the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) process in Bihar. The names of such people will not be included in the final voter list to be published on 30 September. Meanwhile, RJD has questioned the Commission's claim citing a media report and has sought evidence.
Rajya Sabha MP and RJD leader Manoj Jha tweeted a media report and asked the Election Commission where are the sources? In fact, the report said that in the year 2019, the Election Commission told Parliament that in the last few years, the name of “foreign nationals” was negligible in the voter list. Only three cases were reported in 2018.
It was asked in Parliament whether there are cases of including the names of foreign nationals in the voter list during the last three years and the current year. On 10 July 2019, the Election Commission replied in this regard. The Law Ministry said in its reply that the Election Commission has informed that no such case came to its notice in 2016, 2017 and 2019. In 2018, only three such complaints were received which were from one Telangana, one West Bengal and one from Gujarat.
Votes are cut due to these three reasons
The Election Commission said that whenever such complaints are received, the Election Registration Officer (ERO) of the concerned states take appropriate action to investigate the case. Then their EPIC cards are also confiscated. Actually, it is common for the voter list to move the name at the time of amendment. Whenever the voter list is amended, the name is removed from the voter list due to three reasons. In these, a voter has died and information has not been given, the residence of a voter has changed permanently, a “repeat” voter has been registered as a voter in another constituency.
