In a major infrastructure update, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that 94% of the work on the Navi Mumbai International Airport has been completed. The project is on track for a formal launch by September 30, 2025, and aims to become one of the most advanced airports in the country.

Aiming for Global Standards

Speaking during an official site visit, Fadnavis emphasized that the airport will be India’s most modern aviation hub, featuring cutting-edge technology and the world’s fastest baggage handling system. Designed to decongest the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, the Navi Mumbai facility is expected to handle 60 million passengers annually once fully operational.

The terminal building, runway infrastructure, air traffic control (ATC) tower, and cargo handling zones are said to be in their final stages of readiness.

Economic Boost and Connectivity

Officials noted that the project will enhance regional connectivity and serve as a major driver of economic growth in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The airport is integrated with key road and metro networks, including the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) and the Navi Mumbai Metro, ensuring seamless access.

Once operational, it will reduce the pressure on Mumbai’s existing airport and boost international trade, tourism, and job opportunities.

Fadnavis concluded by saying, “This is not just an airport project—it’s a symbol of Maharashtra’s rising stature in global infrastructure development.”

Deputy CM Fadnavis highlighted that thousands of direct and indirect jobs will be generated once the airport becomes operational. “This is more than a transport hub — it’s an economic engine for the state,” he said.

Construction of NMIA, which began in 2018, had faced several delays due to land acquisition issues, pandemic disruptions, and environmental clearances. However, Fadnavis affirmed that all major hurdles are now cleared, and trial runs are expected to begin in August 2025.
