If your account is in Punjab National Bank (PNB), then there is relief news for you. The bank has removed the fine for not having minimum average balance (MAB) on all its savings accounts since 1 July 2025. That is, no penalty will be taken if there is no minimum balance in your account.
What has changed?
As before, PNB also had a condition from its customers to maintain minimum balance for different accounts. If the customers could not do this, then a fine of Rs 10 to 2000 was charged from their account. These fines were different in urban, semi-urban and rural branches.
But now, this rule has changed since 1 July 2025. PNB has announced that now there will be no penalty for not keeping minimum balance in any savings account scheme. This rule is applicable to all customers and all locations.
Why was this decision taken?
PNB says that the move aims to financially empower customers and connect them to the formal banking system. PNB MD and CEO Ashok Chandra said, this decision reflects our commitment to our inclusive banking. We believe that removing such charge will reduce the financial burden on customers and they will be able to avail banking services with more confidence.
Who will benefit more?
This change has brought relief especially for women, farmers and lower income people. Earlier such sections were difficult to maintain minimum balance, which they had to pay repeated fine. Now this initiative of PNB will help in connecting these sections with banking services without any economic pressure. The bank says that this step establishes it as a socially responsible and customer.
