Addressing the last meeting of this year held on Thursday, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Combos Said that “we have never hesitated to raise our voice against the common enemy of humanity like terrorism.” India has been in favor of changes in the UNSC and during its presidency, from the Prime Minister to the Foreign Minister talked about changes in it.
Speaking on the need for reforms in the UNSC, Ruchira Kamboj said that we were fully aware of the fact that there is a need for changes in the UNSC. This belief has only strengthened after our tenure. He said that as our presidency comes to an end, we are convinced that the greater the resistance to change, the greater the threat to the relevance and credibility of the decisions of this group. He praised Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway and said that I appreciate their hard work in the Security Council.
India’s non-permanent membership expiring
India’s non-permanent membership of the UNSC expires on 31 December. Envoys to the United Nations from Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway also addressed the closing session, which will be exiting the UNSC after their two-year term. Talking about India’s purpose in UNSC, Ruchira Kamboj recalled the statement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi which he had given while securing the chairmanship of UNSC. The PM had said that during his presidency, India would use the prestige and experience of being the world’s largest democracy for the benefit of the world.

Kamboj said that “During the last two years, we spoke in favor of peace, security and prosperity. We did not hesitate to raise our voice against common enemies of humanity like terrorism. He said that whatever we talked about was done on behalf of our 1.4 billion Indians and we also want to tell that not only this but we raised the issue of Global South as well. Apart from these, while discussing Maritime Security, he said that we also raised those issues which India felt were important for the world.
