Pakistan PM Imran Khan

The screw is still stuck regarding the chief of Pakistan’s intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). At the same time, sources have told that Prime Minister Imran Khan will appoint the new chief of ISI within two days before leaving for Saudi Arabia on a three-day official visit. A notification in this regard can be issued by Imran. Dawn newspaper quoted sources close to Imran Khan as saying, “There is every possibility that the notification regarding the appointment of ISI chief will be issued on Friday i.e. today.”

Sources said that Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum, one of the designated officers for the ISI chief, met the Prime Minister on Wednesday. He had reportedly met Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa a day earlier. Presently Anjum is working as Corps Commander for Karachi. “Probably a notification will be issued on Friday,” a senior cabinet member told Dawn on condition of anonymity.

Sheikh Rashid said this about the ISI chief

Pakistani Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid had said a few days ago that Prime Minister Imran will appoint a new ISI chief by Friday (today). However, when Rasheed was contacted on Thursday, he simply said, ‘I don’t know anything about this.’ There is a long deadlock in Pakistan over the appointment of the ISI chief. Media reports said that Prime Minister Imran will leave for Saudi Arabia on October 23 on a three-day visit. During this, Imran Khan will meet the Saudi leadership and participate in the Green Initiative conference in the Kingdom.

The standoff in Pakistan arose two weeks ago

A kind of standoff broke out in Pakistan two weeks ago between the country’s civilian and military leaders. It started with some changes in the top officers by the Army Chief. He named Lt Gen Anjum as the next ISI chief and current Chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed as the Corps Commander for Peshawar. However, the prime minister reportedly asked military officials to meet legal and constitutional requirements. Also sent him a summary, in which the names of three candidates were given as ISI Chief.
