Threats to ‘kill’ Tamil prisoners in Sri Lanka, countrywide uproar, jail minister had to resign

Sri Lanka News: A minister in Sri Lanka has resigned after allegedly threatening to kill Tamil prisoners. Tamil political parties of the country had demanded his resignation after the controversial statement.

Sri Lanka Minister Threat to Kill Tamil Prisoners: Sri Lanka’s Minister of State for Prisons Management, Lohan Ratwatte has resigned. He was criticized by Tamil political parties for allegedly threatening to kill Tamil prisoners. Also demanded the resignation of the minister and his arrest. It is said that the minister had allegedly made this threat to Tamil prisoners when they visited the Anuradhapura jail in the north central region of the country.

According to the Colombo Gazette report, Ratavatte had allegedly visited the Anuradhapura Jail on September 12 and forced two prisoners to kneel and threatened to kill them (Prison Minister Resignation). The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) said in a tweet, “We demand the government to immediately remove the minister from the prison management and conduct an immediate inquiry into his arrest and charge and the alleged threat to kill the prisoners in Anuradhapura on Sunday.” We do.’

Minister visited the main jail late at night

Another Tamil party Tamil National People’s Front leader Galen Poonambalam has also confirmed the incident. He claimed that the minister had threatened to kill Tamil prisoners (Prison Minister Statement on Tamil). Reports in local media alleged that the minister had visited the main jail in Colombo late last night to show the gallows to a group of his friends before leaving for the north central city of Anuradhapura.

Minister’s office denies incident

However, Ratawatte’s office denied any such incident involving her, local media reports said. The United Nations representative appointed in the country has also condemned the alleged incident. According to the news of the Colombo Gazette news portal, UN representative Han Singer Hamdi said that it is the duty of the government to protect the rights of the prisoners. There has been a lot of debate in the country regarding this whole incident. Due to which the minister resigned.
