This robbery was committed by nine people, out of which only Sivaram Monian was not punished because he was in hiding for eight years. According to the newspaper, the court told that the victim (35) was a manager in a company called Golden V2 at that time. His father-in-law was the director of the company.
went into debt then looted
Monian had taken a loan of 10,000 ringgit (S$3,019) in 2013 from a man named Tachana Murthy Peromal. Although initially he kept paying the installments of the loan but later he could not do so. In April 2014, Peromal and a man named Sivarugu Armugam hatched a plan to rob Golden V2 of cash being sent by courier. Peromal contacted Monian and asked him to join the heist. He promised that if he did so, he would forgive his entire debt. As soon as he agreed, Peromal and his other accomplice named B. Balakrishnan involved more people in the plan for the robbery. Within about two weeks in September 2014, Balakrishnan, Sekaran, Peromal and Mari went to Singapore to meet Raman and finalize the plan for the heist.
This is how the whole incident happened
As per the plan, it was decided that Raman would keep watch on the victim’s car on Beddock Reservoir Road near Yunus Link while five men including Monion would carry out the heist. Two other companions will sit nearby in another vehicle and wait for them and give them instructions and maintain communication with other companions. On November 5, 2014, the victim left home with his two-year-old son. He drove to Terminal 2 of Changi Airport to collect the cash from the company’s courier. According to the news, there were 6,24,036 Singapore dollars and other foreign currencies as well as two Nokia phones in the luggage bag. After taking these items and an empty bag, the victim left for home where he was a victim of robbery on the way.
The crime was committed in 2014
District Judge Luke Tan found the offense was committed in 2014 but Monian was arrested in Malaysia and extradited in July last year. He said that this shows that there was no sense of guilt in him. After considering all these facts, he convicted Monion and sentenced him to seven years in jail and 12 lashes. Anyone convicted of gang dacoity can be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison and 12 lashes. Other gang members have already been sentenced.
