Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, the caretaker prime minister of the Taliban government, met the Foreign Minister of Qatar on Sunday. This is the highest-level foreign visit by a leader in Afghanistan since the Taliban captured Kabul last month. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani met Mullah Mohammed Hassan Akhund. According to Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, Sheikh Mohammed and Taliban Prime Minister Hassan Akhund discussed concerted efforts to deal with terrorist organizations that threaten the stability of Afghanistan, ways to increase peace in the country and ways for people to get out safely. The meeting was attended by Taliban Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Salam Hanafi, Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki, Defense Minister Yakub Mujahid, Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani and Intelligence Chief Abdul Haq Wasiq, among many other ministers. The Qatari Foreign Ministry said Sheikh Mohamed also met Abdullah Abdullah, a senior official of the previous Afghan government, and former Afghan President Hamid Karzai. This meeting comes at a time when the Taliban announced a caretaker government in Afghanistan on September 7. Qatar is considered one of the countries with the most influence on the Taliban.
